COMPANY HISTORY
Established in 2017 by Susan A. van der Heijden and Conrad Akol, Gorilla Tracking Agency (GTA) was born out of a deep love for Uganda's wildlife. Our mission was to provide ethical and unforgettable gorilla and chimp tracking experiences.
GTA quickly gained recognition for exceptional and responsible tourism, leading to steady growth in a competitive landscape.
And because transparency, conservation, and customer-centric service are the guiding principles at the core of GTA's operations, collaborations with local initiatives, lodges and tour companies strengthened our ability to offer comprehensive wildlife experiences.

Our mission is to create and implement a seamless, straightforward, and transparent reservation policy for gorilla, chimp, and golden monkey permits, catering to tourists visiting Uganda from around the world. Leadership
Susan spearheads Gorilla Tracking Agency's strategic vision and oversees all reservation operations.
Prior to founding Gorilla Tracking Agency, Susan demonstrated her exceptional management skills by successfully operating her own guesthouse in Madagascar. She was responsible for every aspect of the business, including its establishment, administration, and overall management.
With 16 years of experience in the tourism industry, Susan possesses extensive expertise in reservations, administration, and a proficient understanding of financial management. Her professional journey includes valuable stints at Matoke Tours, and Road Trip Uganda, which equipped her with valuable insights into the nuances of trip planning and reservations management.

Susan holds a Bachelor's degree in Leisure and Hospitality Management from Makerere University.
​
Susan possesses excellent communication and organizational skills, demonstrating a meticulous approach. She firmly believes in the philosophy of doing something well or not doing it at all.

Conrad spearheads the day-to-day operations and serves as the General Manager at Gorilla Tracking Agency.
Before founding Gorilla Tracking Agency, Conrad held the position of Reservations and Operations Manager at Matoke Tours. In this capacity, she managed operational functions, gaining invaluable insights that enhanced her comprehension of the complexities involved with operational management.

Conrad holds a master's degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Makerere University, and a bachelor's degree in Leisure and Hospitality Management from the same institution.
Conrad currently serves as the Chairperson of the Tour Guides Investment Club, a collaborative initiative focused on investments in tourism development. Additionally, she actively mentors members of the Uganda Safari Guides Association. Conrad is also engaged in research, exploring the impact of tour guide skills on the performance of tour companies.
Conrad excels as a skilled strategic planner and is highly proficient in operations management. Despite her serious demeanour, she appreciates a good laugh and finds joy in moments of levity.
